3 Places to Go Whitewater Rafting Near Lake Tahoe

Ready to discover some of the best places to go whitewater rafting near Lake Tahoe? From the milder Class II and III rapids of the Truckee River to the intense Class IV rapids of the Middle Fork American River, several whitewater rafting options are within driving distance of Lake Tahoe. I’ve personally rafted these three rivers and recommend them if you’re looking for a whitewater adventure.

TRUCKEE RIVER

The Truckee River is the closest whitewater rafting option on this list to Lake Tahoe and a good choice for beginner to intermediate rafters. Guided trips run on the Boca to Floriston section just outside of Truckee, where you’ll find a mix of calm water, Class II rapids, and Class III sections.
A lot of the trip is spent floating through calmer sections of the river, with most of the more exciting rapids coming toward the end. There are also sections where you can get out and swim, making this a nice mix of relaxing stretches and whitewater. Overall, the Truckee is the least intense option on this list, making it a good choice if you want to try whitewater rafting without taking on a more challenging trip.
The scenery is another highlight. While the American River trips on this list are more scenic, the Truckee still offers beautiful views and a fun way to experience the river from the water.
Season: April–September
SOUTH FORK AMERICAN RIVER

About 1.5 hours from Lake Tahoe, the South Fork American River near Lotus offers a classic whitewater rafting experience through the Sierra foothills. A typical half-day trip lasts around three hours and includes Class II and III rapids, with larger rapids like Hospital Bar and Satan’s Cesspool coming toward the second half of the trip.
There are also calmer sections where you can take in the gorgeous scenery, including rocky cliffs and forested hillsides. If you want something more exciting than the Truckee River but aren’t looking for the intensity of the Middle Fork American River, the South Fork is a good middle ground.
Season: April–October
MIDDLE FORK AMERICAN RIVER

The Middle Fork American River is the most adrenaline-filled whitewater rafting option on the list, with Class III and IV rapids and one major feature that really sets it apart: Tunnel Chute. Tunnel Chute is a Class IV rapid where the raft drops through a steep chute and into a tunnel carved through the rock. When I did this trip, our raft actually flipped during Tunnel Chute, so I can personally say this is not your average rafting trip.
If you’re looking for a seriously exciting whitewater rafting experience and are comfortable with intense rapids, the Middle Fork American River takes things to another level.
