Whitewater rafting near Lake Tahoe and the Sierras

Looking for the best river rafting adventures near Lake Tahoe? From self-guided river floats on the Truckee River to whitewater rafting in the Sierra Foothills, these trips range from easygoing to exciting Class IV rapids. They’re listed from easiest to most adrenaline-filled, so you can find the one that’s right for you.

*Rafting comes with some risks, so be aware and do so at your own risk.

TRUCKEE RIVER FLOAT

The Truckee River Float is a roughly 5-mile float that starts in Tahoe City and ends at River Ranch Lodge. This is a self-guided float, so you can either bring your own raft or rent one from one of the companies right at the Tahoe City put-in. If you rent, the rental includes a life jacket and a shuttle back to Tahoe City after your float so that you can get back to your car.

The float is super mellow, with stretches of calm water and a few light rapids that make it a little more fun. The river is scenic and runs alongside the Truckee bike path, and there are plenty of spots where you can stop and go for a swim along the way.

When you reach River Ranch Lodge, you can end the trip with a drink or a bite to eat right on the river. If you bring your own raft, this can also be a completely free activity; just make sure you use a sturdy raft that can handle the river.

Season: June–September (depending on water levels)

If you’re looking for something more exciting than the float, you can take a guided whitewater rafting tour on the Truckee River between Boca and Floriston, just outside of Truckee. This trip combines stretches of calm water with Class III rapids, with most of the more exciting sections coming toward the end of the tour. It’s a very scenic stretch of river, with beautiful Sierra Nevada views along the way and opportunities to stop and swim.

I found this trip to be less intense than the two American River trips coming up on this list, so it's a good option if you’re new to whitewater rafting or want something that isn’t quite as intimidating.

Season: April–September (depending on water levels)

SOUTH FORK AMERICAN RIVER RAFTING

The South Fork American River near Lotus is a classic whitewater rafting trip with a mix of calmer stretches and exciting rapids. The trip lasts about 3 hours on the water, starting with calmer stretches and Class II rapids before hitting more challenging Class III rapids like Hospital Bar and Satan’s Cesspool in the second half.

I found this trip to be a step up from the Truckee River, with more frequent rapids and plenty of splashing along the way. The scenery is also gorgeous, with the river winding through the Sierra foothills, surrounded by rocky cliffs and forested hillsides. It’s a great choice if you want a fun, action-packed whitewater trip without getting into the most intense rapids.

Season: April–October

MIDDLE FORK AMERICAN RIVER RAFTING

If you’re looking for a seriously exciting whitewater rafting experience, the Middle Fork American River near Auburn is the trip for you. This is by far the most adventurous rafting experience on this list, with Class III and IV rapids throughout the trip. One of the defining features is Tunnel Chute, a steep Class IV rapid that sends the raft through a narrow chute and into a tunnel carved through the rock.

This trip is not for everyone, especially if you’re not comfortable with intense whitewater. When I did it, our raft actually flipped during Tunnel Chute, which made the experience even more intense. But if you’re looking for a big adrenaline rush and want something much more challenging than the Truckee or South Fork, this is it.

If you’re curious to see what this trip is like, check out this video I did on rafting the Middle Fork. It gives a really good POV overview of the trip from start to finish.
